Health and Safety Policy for Orpington Carpet Cleaners
Orpington Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing professional carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks and promoting a safe working culture across all residential and commercial cleaning work.
Our Health and Safety Commitment
We recognise our duty to conduct all cleaning activities safely and responsibly. Our goals are to prevent accidents and work-related ill health, reduce hazards associated with cleaning tasks and maintain safe conditions at every property where we work. We strive to continuously improve our health and safety performance through training, supervision, consultation and regular review of our procedures.
Management Responsibilities
Company management has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. Management will ensure that adequate resources, information and training are provided so that work is carried out safely and in compliance with relevant health and safety requirements. This includes selecting appropriate equipment and cleaning products, carrying out risk assessments for tasks and locations, and ensuring that staff follow agreed safe systems of work.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Orpington Carpet Cleaners has a duty to work safely and to support our health and safety objectives. Staff must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees are expected to follow all training and instructions, use equipment correctly, wear any required personal protective equipment and report hazards, incidents or near misses to management without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before undertaking cleaning work at a property, appropriate risk assessments are carried out to identify and control potential hazards. These may include risks associated with slips and trips, manual handling, electrical equipment, wet surfaces, use of cleaning chemicals and working in occupied premises. Control measures are put in place to reduce risks to an acceptable level, and staff are instructed on safe methods for carrying out each task.
Safe working practices include planning access routes, using signage where necessary, keeping work areas tidy, minimising trailing cables, checking the condition of equipment before use and ensuring that all machinery is operated by trained personnel only.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Cleaning solutions and stain treatments used by Orpington Carpet Cleaners are selected with regard to both effectiveness and safety. We follow Control of Substances Hazardous to Health principles by obtaining and retaining product information and safety data for chemicals in use. Staff are trained in correct dilution, application, storage and disposal procedures, and are instructed to avoid mixing incompatible products.
Where necessary, suitable personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection or masks is provided and must be used in accordance with training. Extra care is taken in homes and premises where there are children, pets or individuals with allergies or respiratory sensitivities.
Equipment, Machinery and Electrical Safety
All carpet cleaning machinery, vacuum units, air movers and accessories are maintained in good working order. Regular inspections are carried out and defective equipment is removed from service until repaired or replaced. Electrical leads and plugs are checked for damage and staff are instructed never to use equipment that appears unsafe.
When working in client properties, staff take care to avoid overloading sockets, running cables across access routes without protection or operating machinery in wet conditions that would make use unsafe. Where extension leads are required, only suitable and tested leads are used.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many cleaning tasks involve moving equipment, hoses, water and furniture. To minimise the risk of strain and injury, staff receive manual handling training that covers safe lifting techniques, team lifting where required, and the use of aids such as trolleys and sliders. Heavy items are not moved without assessing the risk, and where furniture cannot be safely repositioned, staff will not proceed with the task until an alternative arrangement has been agreed with the client.
Client and Public Safety
We recognise that cleaning activities often take place in occupied properties and workplaces. Our procedures are designed to protect clients, their families, employees and visitors. Staff are trained to maintain clear walkways, avoid creating unnecessary noise or disturbance, and to communicate clearly about wet floors or restricted access areas.
Warning signs are used where appropriate to alert people to wet surfaces or trip hazards. Children and pets are kept away from machinery, hoses and cleaning agents during the work. At the end of each job, work areas are left clean, dry where possible and free from equipment and waste.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses, property damage and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. This allows us to investigate causes, record findings and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Staff are briefed on emergency procedures, including how to respond to electrical faults, chemical spills, slips or falls and sudden illness on site.
Where an incident occurs on a client premises, we will cooperate fully with the client in managing the situation and provide clear information about what happened and the steps taken to resolve it.
Training, Supervision and Communication
Health and safety is an integral part of staff induction and ongoing training at Orpington Carpet Cleaners. New employees receive instruction on safe cleaning methods, use of equipment, handling of chemicals, personal protective equipment and site-specific rules. Refresher training is provided when procedures change or new equipment or products are introduced.
Supervisors monitor compliance with health and safety procedures during site visits and audits. Feedback from staff and clients is encouraged to help identify potential improvements. Health and safety information is communicated clearly so that everyone understands their responsibilities.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, best practice, company operations or identified risks. The latest version of the policy is available for staff and clients who wish to understand how Orpington Carpet Cleaners manages health and safety in the delivery of its cleaning services.
